Manager Gary Johnson was pleased with the workout his side received, as United maintained their 100% pre-season record with a 3-2 win over Swansea City’s U23 side at Plainmoor on Tuesday.

With a number of players showing up well in different positions, the match highlighted the versatility that runs through the squad, with Ben Wynter and Frank Vincent both impressing against their young Welsh counterparts.

“Wynts showed me against quick, clever opposition he can play in that centre-half position. At the moment, he’s got a couple of strings to his bow now, which is great. Frankie’s getting better every time, I thought he had a fantastic game.”

It what has been a feature of his side’s previous pre-season performances, United continued to create and convert a number of chances, whilst maintaining their remarkable work-rate up until the final whistle.

“We’re creating chances, we’ve followed on from last year by creating chances against a decent group that have come to Plainmoor,” said Johnson

“We did finish strong, I wanted to give as many as I could 90 minutes, but they [Swansea U23s] didn’t have to. It was a good test for us, because that actually brought on nearly ten players as fresh legs – quick, sharp, little players – and we saw out it out right until the end. Mentally we had to be fit, as well as physically.”

Despite another goal from summer signing Manny Duku, Johnson revealed there is still much more to come from the Dutchman.

“That was good, it was a good goal. It was a great little ball, well worked and we’ve been working on that. It was a very good finish and that’s what he can do. He didn’t have a great game today and I felt he could have done more.

“He has got a top level, and when he gets to that top level he’s a very dangerous player for you. Today he didn’t really give me as much dangerous centre-forward play as I want, and he knows that, but he got his goal and that’s nice.

“I think he’ll run his proverbials off the next game, because I’ll be watching him!”
