With his signing only announced shortly before kick-off, new boy Ben Whifield won a place in the Yellow Army’s affections by making an instant impact in the match against old rivals Woking.
Despite making a strong start, it was the home side that took the lead early in the second half, leaving Gary Johnson’s men seeking an equaliser in order to claim a deserved point.
It was therefore with some jubilation that the Torquay contingent celebrated Whitfield’s 79th minute equaliser, with the former Port Vale forward providing a calm headed finish from Ben Wynter’s deep cross into the box.
“Obviously scoring on my debut was a dream start,” said Ben after the match.
“The lads said that it was like a derby, so it was nice to get the equaliser in such a big game.”
