Torquay United head coach Gary Owers is continuing his search for more signings to bolster his squad.

United added Plymouth Argyle striker Alex Fletcher and Colchester United midfielder Tommy O’Sullivan to the fold on Thursday in a bid to add a cutting edge to United’s play. His efforts to secure a striker with physical presence continues, something that is easier said than done.

“I need a focal point at the top of the pitch,” said Owers at his weekly press call. “I need someone to lead the line.”

“I’ve been loyal, or persevered with most of the players that were here when I arrived and I have to try and mix things up a bit. We have to start winning games very, very quickly and the best way I know how to win games is by scoring goals.

“We need to have players capable of scoring in the team. I am looking at strikers and attacking midfield players.”

Owers’ search has been a frustrating one, but he expects more signings to be coming soon, despite players being put off by United’s position in the league.

“I’ve had numerous knock-backs. I was in deep discussions with a centre forward in the [Football] League and he got involved in speaking with other clubs in healthier positions than ourselves, so of course you lose out. It does get mentioned [the league position] so the players that do arrive will be players that are quite happy to come and have a fight and a scrap with the rest of us to try and get out of this position.

“There is money available, and I’m not going to use money as an excuse for not being able to sign players. I’ve got to put together a team in the next 7 days that is going to be competitive.”

The Gaffer also sees possibilities for players leaving the Club in his squad shake-up.

“It is ongoing, there have been tentative enquiries about people that haven’t really been in the starting 11. That will be their decision, because they’ve got contracts and they have to decide whether they want to stay here and take part, and contribute, is the biggest thing. Or maybe try their luck somewhere else.
