United head off today in preparation for Friday’s big match away to Chester FC. The six-pointers that have loomed in the distance over the last month are now coming thick and fast for Gary Owers’ first team squad.

“We’re into the real late stage of the season,” said Owers at his weekly press call. “We’ve got to collect points very, very quickly.”

“At the moment we have to just worry about catching the team above us. The focus is on Chester; it’s a massive game and then followed up, hopefully, by a with a home game on Monday against Woking.”

Pressure can do funny things to footballers, but the Gaffer isn’t worried that nerves will get to his players.

“I haven’t seen us be nervous, or play nervous. It’s about preparing for the game. They know the importance of the game, we all do. If you your approach right, the preparation right, then we can take that into the game on Friday and put on a performance. Recent performances are good.

“I watched them [Chester] play Wrexham a couple of weeks ago in the local derby. They’ve got some good young players – energetic, well organized and they’re in the same position as us so they’re fighting for their lives. It’s their home game so they’ll be trying to win and start their own escape.

Goalkeeper Neal Osborn played for Mousehole FC at the weekend to gain first team football. Josh Gowling participated some of training this week and could be in contention. Jakub Sokolik has been suffering from bouts of sickness and may not be a part of the match day squad. Jake Gosling has been suffering from sickness after his return from international duty with Gibraltar.

Rhys Healey joined the Club before the Solihull game and came off the bench to make an impact late in the game.

“He looks really desperate to play,” said Owers about the Cardiff City loanee. “I’ve been really impressed with him, with what I have seen in training and he looks a really good player so I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Torquay shirt and seeing what he brings.”
