After six long months away, Torquay United finally return to footballing action tomorrow, as Gary Johnson’s side take on Hemel Hempstead in their opening pre-season friendly at Plainmoor.

In line with all of the club’s pre-season matches, Saturday’s fixture will be staged behind closed doors, however despite no spectators being present, the Yellow Army will still be able to see their heroes in action, with the club providing live streaming via the club website for the first time (click here).

With a match to look forward to, and supporters able to view proceedings – albeit from afar – it was no wonder that United’s manager was in buoyant mood.

“I think we are all looking forward to the game – that’s the main thing,” began Johnson.

“It’s the first competitive game for a long time. There’s not a great deal of time before the season gets underway, so a lot of work has to be done in training – as much as our end product being seen in games.

“It was good that Hemel Hempstead decided that they were happy to come to Torquay. I wish their manager, Lee Bircham, all the very best for the season. I know a lot about him, because I was best friends with his dad for years – also Lee Bircham – when we played together at Brentford. I believe that Lee Bircham junior will have a very good career in the game as a manager / coach. I am sure they will be competitive.

“It’s great news that our supporters will be able to see the game through live streaming. I watched the National League South play-off games myself, and enjoyed watching them, knowing it was the next best thing to watching the game live.”
