National League football returns to Plainmoor on Saturday when we welcome Tranmere Rovers (kick-off 3pm).

Pre-Season is done and dusted, and all that remains before every team in the National League are 46 games that will determine the course of what should be a terrific season.

United completed their pre-season campaign with a big 6-0 win over Truro City at Plainmoor. The goals were a timely boost for United, especially given the quality of strikes, especially those by tremendous strikes from Ryan Higgins and Damon Lathrope.

While injury doubts hang over a couple of Kevin Nicholson’s men, he has confidence that whatever team runs out onto the pitch, they have put enough work in during pre-season to be in a confident mood.

“I am very much looking forward to the match,” said Nicholson.

“It’s a great chance to put ourselves up against the favourite to win the league, and show what we’ve worked on and what we have learned.

“It’s a tough early test, but this group have worked very hard and I’m sure they will thrive on it. Their preparation has been excellent and now the points are there for us to go for, which is what all footballers love.

“I’m hoping for a big crowd and a big atmosphere. The noise and support that the Yellow Army are renowned for will be gratefully appreciated by all the players and staff.

“Roll on Saturday!”

Tranmere head into this match as favourites to win the National League this season. After missing out on promotion last season, Rovers have bolstered an already strong squad by signing striker James Alabi who struck 17 goals for Chester last season. Other familiar names among their ranks include Connor Jennings who scored in last season’s National League Play-Off final, former Exeter City forward James Norwood, and new signings Ollie Norburn and ex-Blackburn Rovers defender Jay McEveley.

Tranmere Rovers manager, Micky Mellon has ruled out long-term absentees Ben Tollitt, Jake Kirby, and James Wallace from Saturday’s squad.

Keep an eye out for our Junior Premier League squads that will be on the pitch before kick-off. They will be joined by Torquay United Ladies – all teams under one roof!
