Torquay United boss Kevin Nicholson was pleased with the 6-0 win against Truro City on Friday night, but admits he isn’t reading too much into the result.

“They did a lot of good stuff”, said Nicholson. “It was almost a bad thing, how good we were for the first 15 minutes, because it then killed the game and it became a bit false.

“However, I thought the lads showed good discipline in the second half. I challenged them at half-time to go out and win the second half, in fairness to them, they did that.”

Goals from Luke Young, two from James Gray, Ryan and strikes from Ryan Higgins, Damon Lathrope and Jon-Paul Pittman completed the rout on a wet night at Plainmoor.

“There was some very very good football and some very very good goals. Nice for the fans that turned up to watch it. We’ve now got to take that into our preparation for next week and I’ve got to somehow pick a team of 16-18 lads that all deserve to play.”

Nicholson reflected on what has been a busy pre-season for the Gulls, which has left him with some big decisions to make.

“I’ve learned that we can play several different formations effectively. I’ve learned that the players are retentive, wanting to learn and they’re going to raise my game, because I need to give them the best of me.

“I’ve learned that they’re a very very good group and their chemistry has come along really well early on but we’ve now got to go and do that in the season. There is going to highs and lows and we’ve got to make sure that we stay consistent throughout.

“It’s going to be a very difficult job to pick a team hard to pick a formation based on how well everyone’s done all over the place, so a good problem to have! I’m proud of the work that the players have put in over pre-season but that’s gone now. From this weekend on, all I’m bothered about is Tranmere and how we’re going to try and give them a game.”
