Gary Johnson was delighted with his men after United produced a dominant 5-0 win over Hartlepool United with a hat -trick from Danny Wright and goals from Ben Whitfield and Gary Warren.

Johnson spoke to BT Sport after the match: “We started very well, very well. You go 2-0 up in fifteen minutes playing to the plan and then the lads see that the plan’s working straight away. It gives them more oxygen if you like.

“We review the opposition, always, as I’m sure they review us. Then you just hope that the boys take on the information and then can produce the information their given. If you’re giving them the right information then you get a result like this where the whole thing comes together. They’re [Hartlepool] not a bad side and they still looked dangerous even at two, three, four nil. If they get one they’ll start thinking they can get back in it.

“I’m proud of the boys and they’ve put in a big effort and they’ve been doing that all season which is why they’re top of the league at the moment.”

After Stockport’s defeat to Weymouth United sit five points clear at the top of the table.

“As we stand at the moment we feel that we’ve got what it takes – it’s only early days,” said Johnson. “We’ve got that mix of experience – bit of youth. We’ve got that team spirit at this minute in time, and today it went with the confidence and we gave ourselves a good chance to get further ahead very early. That’s going to be important, I think.”
