Shaun MacDonald has received the Vanarama National League South Player Of The Month for December.

MacDonald, who signed a new contract with the club last week, was in excellent form during December, culminating in clean sheets in the away victories against Dulwich Hamlet, Dartford and Hampton & Richmond, as the Gulls rose to the summit of the National League South table.

“I’m very happy that Shaun has got this accolade,” said TUFC manager, Gary Johnson.

“He’s done very, very well and kept the opposition down to very few goals against. Of course, he will be the first one to admit he’s had a very good work ethic and defending ethic in front of him.  However, when he’s been needed to pull off a save or to have a tidy game and to kick well, he’s come up trumps.

“Not only our staff and supporters, but I’m sure his teammates will be very happy that Shaun has won this award.”

Shaun was obviously delighted to receive his award, but was also quick to share the recognition with the rest of the team.

“I didn’t really expect it, but personally I don’t think it’s down to me – It’s down to the manager, my teammates, Phil [Osborn, goalkeeper coach] and George [Burton, goalkeeper]. I’ve got to thank all my teammates and everyone around the club. Although it’s an individual award, it’s about the team.”

“Things like this make it worthwhile, we’re moving in the right direction and hopefully between now and the end of the season a few more of the lads will be getting these.”

United’s goalkeeper felt the win at Dulwich Hamlet (0-2) was a particular highlight during the month.

“I think I made saves at important times. It was a team effort and it’s never just one player that wins the game. You’ve always got to keep switched on, just keep it simple and whether it’s minute one or minute ninety. I’ve always got the confidence in the boys going forward that they are going to score.”
