Torquay United head coach Gary Owers enthused about the impact of new loan signings Opi Edwards (left) and Jake Andrews (right) after United’s 2-0 win over Hemel Hempstead Town at Plainmoor on Saturday.

Both players made a big impact on the day, with Andrews coming away with two assists having put Jamie Reid in on goal, and then taking the corner that allowed Asa Hall to head home. The players from Bristol City have added an extra element to the Gaffer’s squad.

“It’s just a bit of enthusiasm,” said Owers after the final whistle. “Look at Opi, he got the biggest cheer for running 90 yards the other way because the supporters want to see that.”

United were hit with the withdrawal of midfield playmaker Ryan Dickson on the Friday before the game which made the players’ performances all the more important.

“They are different types of players. Jake’s got that quality, he can unlock defences. Opi excites a crowd. They’ve come in and they’ve made training brighter as well, so in a couple of days since they’ve been here they’ve made a big impact.”

Saturday saw United back to winning ways after four games without scoring a goal. The Gaffer was relieved to see his team come through a difficult first half where Hemel Hempstead created some clear chances on goal, one a header from Herschel Sanchez-Watt that struck the post. Players produced performances that were worthy of mention despite Owers wanting more from his team to get back into the race for promotion.

“Chris Regis grew in the game. [He’s] still a young player and obviously he’ll benefit from playing alongside Asa [Hall] who I thought was excellent for us today. Nice to see him score a goal as well.”

United are at Plainmoor once again on Saturday when they face Chippenham Town.

“We’re not getting carried away. Hopefully it is something to build on. The draw at Gloucester looked a terrible result. You get a point away and you come and win at home and it makes it look a little bit better, a little bit better. You follow that up now with another home victory then we’re moving in the right direction again.”
