United Bow Out Of The Bowl

Gulls beaten by Fishermen in shoot-out

There was penalty pain for United on Tuesday evening, as Torquay exited the Devon St Luke’s Challenge Bowl at the hands of Brixham AFC at Wall Park.

A goalless first half saw the hosts strive to make the most of home advantage, however the Fishermen had to wait until after the change of ends to find the breakthrough.

It was Cole Harford that eventually broke the deadlock, as he fired past Gulls ‘keeper Matt Wonnacott in the 53rd minute to delight the home contingent in an impressive crowd of 912.

For a long time it looked like that goal would be enough to seal Brixham’s progress, but after going close to levelling on a couple of occasions, Matt Carson eventually restored parity in the third minute of stoppage time, with his fine strike taking the tie to penalty kicks.

Despite gaining an early advantage after Wonnacott saved Halford’s spot-kick, fellow scorer Carson also failed to convert his effort to leave things all-square. In the end it was a miss from Jordan Thomas that ultimately proved most costly, leaving Brixham to march on after clinching a 4-3 shoot-out success.
