The Yellow Army’s long-awaited return to Plainmoor will finally be over on Tuesday, as The Gulls take on Plymouth Argyle in United’s first home friendly of pre-season.
Having won three of their four warm-up matches so far – including Saturday’s 2-1 success at divisional rivals Weston-super-Mare – tomorrow’s encounter against the League One Pilgrims will represent a sizeable challenge for Jimmy Ball’s men.
However, after nearly three months away, anticipation for a home fixture is building around Plainmoor, as the 2026/27 National League South season draws ever closer.
Tomorrow’s Opponents
Plymouth Argyle’s 2025/26 season was one of transition, resilience and rebuilding following their relegation from the Championship. Returning to League One for the club’s 140th season, Argyle entered the campaign determined to mount an immediate promotion challenge under head coach Tom Cleverley. Expectations were high, with supporters hoping the club could quickly re-establish itself among the division’s leading sides after the disappointment of the previous year.
The Greens made a positive start, remaining competitive throughout the opening months and showing encouraging signs both at Home Park and away from home. Cleverley sought to blend experienced players with younger talent, creating a hardworking, organised side capable of competing with the division’s strongest teams. Although consistency occasionally proved elusive, Argyle spent much of the campaign within touching distance of the play-off places and remained firmly involved in the promotion race.
Home Park once again proved to be one of the club’s greatest strengths, with strong attendances and vocal support helping Argyle collect important points. The team’s attacking football produced several memorable victories, while improvements in defensive organisation enabled them to recover from difficult periods during the winter months. Striker Lorent Tolaj emerged as one of the side’s most influential players, finishing among the club’s leading scorers and providing a consistent goal threat throughout the season.
Cup competitions provided mixed fortunes. Argyle’s League Cup and FA Cup campaigns ended relatively early, allowing the club to focus primarily on its promotion ambitions. In contrast, they enjoyed a respectable run in the EFL Trophy, progressing through the group stage with notable victories before eventually exiting the competition in the knockout rounds.
As the season entered its closing stages, Argyle remained in contention for promotion but faced stiff competition from several well-resourced clubs. A series of inconsistent results prevented them from sustaining a prolonged automatic promotion challenge, although they continued to demonstrate character and determination until the final weeks. The campaign highlighted both the progress made since relegation and the areas still requiring improvement if the club is to return to the Championship.
Overall, the 2025/26 season represented a solid foundation rather than a complete success. While an immediate return to the second tier proved elusive, Argyle established themselves once again as one of League One’s competitive sides. With an experienced manager, a committed squad and the continued backing of the Green Army, there was genuine optimism that the lessons learned during the campaign could provide the platform for a stronger promotion push in 2026/27.
