PREVIEW | United Women Kick-Off Home Campaign v Ascot

There is no place like home, and after what has felt like an eternity, Torquay United Women will once again take to the hallowed turf of Plainmoor.

Following a handful of new additions being added to the core of last season’s treble-winning squad, the Yellow Army will this afternoon have the chance to see some of those new faces up close this afternoon as Ascot United make the trip to Plainmoor (23/08/26 2pm KO).

The most recent arrival is Beth Ireland, who joins from Exeter City. The midfielder has previously played at this level for City and Plymouth, as well as plying her trade at Step 3 over the last few seasons.

Ireland’s arrival brings the number of new faces among the United ranks to five, with a further three players having turned their loan spells at the club into permanent moves.

Ascot head into the game on the back of a defeat last weekend. Unlike United, who were in their game against Wycombe right until the final whistle, Ascot ended the opening day on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline at home to Gwalia, who United will welcome to Plainmoor next Sunday.

United’s away trip to Wycombe was another example of the fine margins in football, with United creating a number of opportunities to come away from the long journey with at least a point.

A number of players missed the trip to Wycombe through injury or illness, and it remains unclear whether any of those players will be ready for selection for Sunday’s home opener.

One player who did hit the ground running was Hannah Bishop. The goalkeeper, making her competitive debut last weekend, produced a number of crucial saves to keep United in the game throughout. Sarah Stacey also impressed, having two chances cleared off the line as United pushed for an equaliser.

Perks was also keen to stress that last weekend was just the first game of a long season and that it was the first league defeat United have suffered since he took the helm.

The Yellow Army will once again play a vital role in backing the team this Sunday, with players and staff within the club’s women’s setup calling on supporters to come out in numbers and help turn Plainmoor into the fortress it can be, as United look to kick off the home portion of their season with a win.

Tickets for Sunday’s clash are on sale now, with Plainmoor Pass holders United not required to purchase a ticket for this encounter.
