Ball Demands Reaction After Disappointing Home Defeat

Torquay United manager Jimmy Ball delivered a frank assessment of his side’s performance following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Hemel Hempstead Town in their final home league match of the regular season.

In front of a crowd approaching 5,000 at Plainmoor, the Gulls fell behind early when Remaye Campbell capitalised on a counter-attack. Torquay United responded before the break, with Deon Moore continuing his fine form by levelling the score.

However, the visitors regained the lead early in the second half through a superb strike from Mauro Vilhete. Despite having ample time to mount a comeback, Torquay struggled to find their rhythm and failed to threaten consistently.

Ball did not hide his frustration after the match, pointing to poor decision-making and a lack of composure across the pitch.

“There was really poor decision-making for the first goal from five or six players, which leaves you scratching your head,” he said. “We looked nervy and edgy, and there was no reason to be. It should have been a case of going out and playing in front of a big crowd, but the opposite happened.”

The Torquay boss admitted he barely recognised his team’s style of play, particularly as they deviated from their usual approach under pressure.

“It was never the plan to go long, but nerves can change people,” Ball added. “I didn’t recognise us today. It’s not how I asked them to play. But this isn’t about me and them — it’s about us.”

While acknowledging the visitors’ efforts, Ball emphasised that his side were second best in key areas.

“Credit to Hemel Hempstead — they stopped us playing, executed their game plan well, and outfought us. We were beaten in too many individual battles, especially when it came to first and second balls.”

Moore’s goal proved to be one of the few positives on an otherwise frustrating afternoon, but Ball made it clear that more is expected from his squad.

“It was a good finish from Deon, but overall we were too slow in everything we did,” he said. “The message at half-time was to be braver and move the ball quicker, but we didn’t do that.”

Looking ahead, Ball called on his players to take responsibility and respond with determination.

“I hear people say it’s my job to lift the players, but they’re grown men. If they’re not angry and motivated to prove a point after that performance, then we have a problem.

“They should be angry — because they are better than that.”
