TUFC Girls impress on the big stage
Last weekend was undoubtedly a fantastic one for everyone at Torquay United, with high-scoring away wins for both our men’s and women’s senior sides. However, the good news began earlier in the Easter Half-Term break, with TUFC’s Under-9 Girls Yellow securing an eye-catching win over English footballing giants Arsenal!
Although an impressive achievement in itself, coach Sam Cook explained that the result was just reward for a series of committed performances over the past two seasons.
“Our yellows have had a great season up until now,” explained Sam.
“We made the decision to enter the girls in the DJM mixed league this season due to a run of impressive results last year, and the girls have demonstrated a superb willingness to learn and develop all season.
“When they’re not playing DJM teams, the girls have had the chance to play a total of six other professional football clubs across the south of England including Exeter, Plymouth Argyle, Forest Green Rovers, Oxford and unbelievably, Arsenal!”

After already chalking up a number of excellent results against the other clubs & academies, the big occasion eventually took place last Wednesday, as our Young Gulls headed to The Hive in London to take on their counterparts from one of English football’s most recognisable clubs.
Cook was understandably delighted with his team’s showing against the Gunners.
“The girls arrived in London full of confidence, but knew they was now going up against one of the best academies in the country. The Girls played two Arsenal sides across the morning, and amazingly, they won both games!
“There was some incredible football on display from both teams, and it was a really high-quality morning of football.
“The results confirm our girls are among the best sides in the whole country in their age group, and what makes this group of girls even more special is we haven’t done yearly trials or looked for the best girls in the area – the majority of these girls have been with Torquay United since they were 7 years old.
“The string of impressive results is real testament to this group’s relentless desire to want to learn, develop and be the best players they can be!”

Everybody at Torquay United FC would like to send its congratulations to all the Under-9 Girls Yellow players, and their coach Sam, for this fantastic achievement!
Well done, all… Come On You Yellows!
