TUFC mourns the loss of former Club Chairman
Torquay United FC is saddened to learn of the recent passing of former Club Chairman Lew Pope.
After originally joining the board of directors in 1977, Lew took over from long-standing former chair Tony Boyce during the 1983/84 campaign and stayed at the helm until the end of the decade, when he stepped down following Mike Bateson’s takeover in 1990.
Lew’s time in charge saw the Club rise from testing circumstances on and off the pitch to enjoy some memorable moments in the late 1980s, including the 1987/88 Play-Off campaign and the Club’s first trip to Wembley in the form of the Sherpa Van Trophy Final the following season.

Remaining a devoted Gulls fan in later years, Pope passed away at Ilsham Valley Nursing Home on July 31st aged 103.
The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Plainmoor go out to Lew’s wife Virginia, and all of his family and friends at this very difficult time.
