One Step Away For United’s Women

Ryan Perks’ side are just one point away from achieving their promotion dream

Just 24 hours after Torquay United’s men battle it out against Hornchurch in the National League South Promotion Final, our women will be looking to make it an truly unforgettable weekend for TUFC as they head to Ilminster to take on Sherborne Town Ladies in their final league game of the season.

Despite a last-gasp last weekend robbing Perks’ team of the opportunity to seal the title at AEK Boco last weekend, the 1-1 draw was enough to all-but confirm United’s return to the FA Women’s National League after a two-year absence, with only a goal avalanche in 2nd-placed Forest Green Rovers robbing The Gulls of a place in fourth tier for 2026/27.

Whilst last Friday’s County Cup win over SB Oak Villa means that a domestic treble is still on the cards – with a League Cup final v Poole Town just nine days away too – there’s no doubt of where United’s priorities have laid all season, and Sunday’s trip to Somerset gives them the perfect stage to realise their ambitions.

It was, of course, just twelve months ago that a galling 1-0 day defeat at Sherborne’s hands saw the league slip from United’s grasp on the last day, with Marine Academy Plymouth taking the one promotion spot instead.

There has been plenty of changes in personnel and structure since then though, and the mood around Plainmoor suggests that barring a 28-goal swing on Sunday, United are better placed than ever before to lock horns with some of the FAWNL’s big-hitters next term.

As ever, the Yellow Army will be warmly welcomed to cheer the girls onto glory, with the match taking place at the Archie Gooch Pavillion, home of Ilminster Town (TA19 9FE).

Entrance price for this fixture is £3, with the kick-off being at the slightly later time of 3pm.

As ever, those unable to travel can listen to live and exclusive commentary via TUFC Radio HERE from 2.45pm
