A late equaliser may have denied United’s women celebrating the SWRWFL title on Sunday, but Torquay will now head to Sherborne next weekend knowing a point will be enough to secure promotion.

In truth, The Gulls’ latest point will already require a set of unlikely goalscoring combinations to go against them in seven days time, with only a 28-goal swing denying Ryan Perks’ side.

Although The Gulls were the better side throughout in Bristol, they never threatened to repeat anything like their prolific nature on Friday evening’s 10-0 County Cup triumph.

It wasn’t until the half-hour maker that they eventually got the breakthrough, as Connie Pengelly’s header struck the post, only for Beth Everson, in typical poacher territory, to prod home and make it 1-0.

The second half saw Perks’ side continue to probe, and although they look the likelier of the two sides to score next, a clinching second goal never arrived.

A late equaliser did though, as Hooper beat United stopper Ellie Mitchell to make it all-square in the 88th minute.

For a while, Forest Green’s 0-0 scoreline at home to Poole seemed like it would be the safety net United required, until another late goal – this time a winner for Rovers – saw the title presentation put on hold.

Onto Sherborne it is then, and a chance to erase last year’s disappointment with this year’s joy.
