United secured their first three points on the road thanks to an early strike by captain Matt Worthington in a 1-0 victory at The Roy McEnhill stadium.
Sonny Blu-lo-Everton returned to the starting line-up and new loan signing Cian Dillon also made his first start for United.
United started brightly and were starting to test Salisbury when the breakthrough happened in the 8th minute. Callum Dolan’s ball into the box found captain Matt Worthington who poked the ball into the far corner. It was Worthington’s first goal for United.
Midfielder Callum Dolan then took aim from 25 yards in the 17th minute but his shot narrowly missed the target.
United were awarded a penalty after a shove on forward Louis Dennis who was bearing down on goal. Top scorer Jordan Young stepped up but his effort low to the ‘keeper’s right was smothered. United were to spurn one more great opportunity to score in the 37th minute. Louis Dennis, a constant threat coming in from wide positions, sent a ball across the box. That was initially defended but without being cleared the ball dropped to Matt Worthington seven yards out. The goal beckoned but Worthington was unable to find the target sending the ball over the bar. It could easily have been 3-0 to United with five minutes of the first half remaining.
United manager Paul Wotton made an early change in the second half with Cian Dillon making way for Codey Cooke. Dillon was full of clever runs and hard work in his 50 or so minutes on the pitch.
United rarely had to deal with incursions into their penalty box. One of the more dangerous ones was foiled by Denzel Akyeampong who speedily interceded to clear the ball.
Salisbury’s best chance fell to Matt Briggs. Bearing down on goal Briggs tried to beating Hamon down to his right but our number 1 managed a great save with his legs to keep United in front.
United saw the game out keeping Salisbury at arms length to earn all three points.
Thank you to the hundreds of United fans that made the trip!
