Tough test in store for Ryan Perks’ title-chasing team
Following three successive home matches – and convincing victories – Torquay United’s women head to Dorset on Sunday to take on old rivals Sherborne.
Of course, it was this corresponding fixture last season that saw a heart-breaking 1-0 defeat at Ilchester condemn United to miss out on the league title, and with it promotion, on the final day of the 2024/25 campaign.
Torquay partially avenged that result with a 3-2 success in their opening home game at Plainmoor last September, and a similar result this weekend would go some way to ensuring that The Gulls’ FA Women’s National League aspirations are finally realised in Spring.
Sherborne though, as always, will be no pushover.

League leaders themselves until recently, costly defeats at Forest Green Rovers and Poole Town have left them four points behind Perks’ side, and having played two games more than United, defeat on Sunday may signal the end of any realistic title challenge for The Zebras this term.
Last weekend’s convincing 4-0 win over Poole at Coach Road saw Torquay go three points clear of Forest Green at the top of the table, however, with Rovers having played one game fewer ahead of their trip to bottom-placed Bishops Lydeard this weekend, United can ill-afford any slip-ups at Town.
