Wotton On Dover Win

United manager Paul Wotton gave his thoughts after seeing his side come back from two goals down to beat Dover 3-2 at Crabble on Tuesday evening.

After seeing his side go two goals down early on, things were looking bleak for his side, in less than ideal conditions.

“I think that one was one of the most unenjoyable games I’ve had since I’ve been managing,” said Wotton.

“It was tough conditions, and the pitch was very heavy. You don’t realise how bad it is until you walk across it.

“It was a seven hour trip to get here in the rain and traffic, after a hard game on Saturday, and after going 2-0 down after twenty minutes – it could have been 3-0 – to go in at 2-2, I thought we were fortunate.”

A brace from recalled striker Cody Cooke saw United level-pegging at the change of ends, before Gulls skipper Sam Dreyer had the final say in the second half, with The Gulls’ boss praising the character shown by his team.

“It was two brilliant finishes from Cody Cooke. Then in the second half, it was a war of attrition. We couldn’t play the way we wanted to play, and Hammy didn’t play it out from the back once, because we couldn’t.

“Sam’s winning goal was a good goal, he’s got good technique and he was composed – he could have slashed at it. For his size, and the way he attacks the ball, he should get more.

“I think we showed good character. It took us a while to get going, but it’s just about winning. We won’t keep getting away with giving teams leads, we need to stop that, and to go 2-0 down felt a little bit inevitable. They should have put us to bed in the first half really, but they didn’t.

“Tonight was an important one.”
