Deon Moore has returned from international duty with Guyana full of confidence — giving Jimmy Ball plenty to consider as United prepare to face Slough Town.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Ball said the forward had trained well following his journey home and praised his professionalism.
“He’s come back in great shape, full of confidence,” said Ball. “He’s humble and hardworking.”
The United manager believes experiencing a different style of football can benefit Moore, describing his international spell as “almost like a freshen-up”.
His return adds to the competition for places after Cody Cooke and Callum Morton impressed in the FA Cup victory at Tonbridge Angels.
“I’ve got a real headache because I thought the two boys on Saturday were exceptional,” said Ball. “Cody was great. Callum was great.”
Morton’s involvement in creating the winning goal was another encouraging step for a player whose fitness and match sharpness United have carefully developed.
Asked what the striker brings, Ball pointed to his “know-how, experience, street smarts”, alongside his movement and finishing.
“He’s a running nine. He makes great runs. He’s got great movement. He’s a good finisher,” he said.
After injuries and limited football before arriving at Plainmoor, Morton is benefiting from a patient approach.
“We’ve really worked hard with him, haven’t rushed him, got him right,” said Ball. “Now mentally and physically he’s right. You’ve just got to build those games up.”
With Moore back and the forwards pushing one another, Ball wants players to make their case through their daily work.
“Make it impossible for the manager not to pick you every single day,” he said.
For Morton, that competition is part of his continued progress.
“He’s fighting for his place like they all are,” added Ball. “I’m really pleased for him.”
