Moneyfields Women showed why they are among the strongest sides in the division, coming from behind to condemn Torquay United Women to a 3-1 defeat at the John Jenkins Stadium.

The Gulls made a bright start in Hampshire and almost opened the scoring inside the first two minutes. Matilda Franchi saw her effort blocked at the near post before Megan Fox produced a superb goal-line clearance to deny United an early breakthrough.

Franchi was involved again five minutes later, driving an effort off a defender’s shin to win Torquay their first corner. Mollie Taylor arrived at the resulting set-piece and came close to turning the ball home as the visitors continued to apply pressure.

Moneyfields offered occasional threats of their own, with Tierney Scott testing Hanna Bishop from around 30 yards on 17 minutes. At the other end, Kaylee Buckingham delivered a dangerous ball into the area for Libby Hester, who slid an effort towards goal.

United continued to create the better opportunities, with Everson sending the ball across goal as Mia King was forced into action, pushing it around the post with Brooke Ellis and Franchi arriving in support.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 36 minutes, and it was a moment of quality from Stacey. A direct ball from the centre of the pitch found the forward, who controlled the opportunity and fired beyond King from the edge of the penalty area to register her sixth league goal of the season. It was a reward for United’s positive first-half display, and Stacey almost doubled her tally just a minute later, only to lift her strike over the crossbar.

Ellis then went close from a tight angle on 39 minutes, but King produced an excellent save to keep Moneyfields within touching distance.

There was late controversy before the interval when Taylor challenged for a 50-50 ball in the penalty area. The home side appealed for a spot-kick, but the referee allowed play to continue, and Torquay went into the break with their slender advantage intact.

Having deservedly taken the lead into half-time, the Gulls faced a much more determined Moneyfields side after the restart. The hosts increased the pressure and drew level on 55 minutes when Kaylee Buckingham pulled the ball back for Olivia Venditto to finish neatly from 12 yards.

United struggled to regain their first-half rhythm as Moneyfields continued to press. Bishop produced an outstanding save to turn Scott’s effort behind, before Skye-Louise Granger headed wide from the resulting corner.

The warning signs were there, and Moneyfields took the lead on 71 minutes when Scott broke through the United defence after the hosts won the battle in midfield, finishing confidently beyond Bishop.

Torquay looked to respond, but the home side continued to apply pressure and extended their advantage on 80 minutes. Unable to clear their lines following a corner, United allowed Scott to finish with the outside of her boot, completing her brace and sealing a 3-1 victory for Moneyfields.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Gulls, who had looked the more dangerous side in the first half and were rewarded for their efforts through Stacey’s opener. However, a much-improved second-half display from Moneyfields saw the hosts turn the contest around, leaving Torquay to reflect on a game of two halves.
