Perks Looks Back On Memorable Campaign

Manager Ryan Perks saluted his Torquay United Women side, after their 5-0 triumph over Poole Town saw them seal an unprecedented domestic treble.

With the MJM Sports League Cup added to the Devon County Cup and promotion via winning the SWRWFL title, Perks was understandably delighted with his team’s efforts over the past season.

“The girls have been fantastic this season,” said United’s boss.

“We’ve said it all season, but to come here on a difficult pitch, and put on that performance, was outstanding from the girls.

“It’s the old cliché that you take one game at a time, and we’ve tried not to lose focus on what we’ve wanted to achieve this season, and we’ve been brilliant all season. To go the season unbeaten is a credit to the girls.

“I’m over the moon for the team.”

Having temporarily lost departed from their free-scoring ways in the back-to-back away draws over AEK Boco (1-1) and Sherborne (0-0) in successive ways, Ryan was pleased to see his side back to their prolific best against Town.

“I think we lost a bit of focus over the past two games and felt the pressure of trying to get it over the line.

“Even in those games we created the opportunities, but there’s been a combination of good goalkeeping, good defending and lacking a bit of quality.

“We spoke earlier this week about the style we want to play, and I think we did that superbly to beat a very good side in the right way.”

After a well-earned break for staff and players alike, attention will soon shift to planning for the challenge the FA Women’s National League will present to United – and Perks is already looking forward to that prospect.

“We’ll have a few days off, relax and enjoy the moment, and then the hard work will start on preparing to get started again.

“It’s going to be a challenge next year, and it will be difficult. This group has been great to work with, and I think we’ll be good enough to comepte.

“We’ll make a few additions and make sure we’re ready to kick-start in the summer.”
