United secured their third win of pre-season on Saturday, as they secured a hard-fought win at Wall Park.
A committed home side made it difficult for Jimmy Ball’s side to create the kind of opportunities they enjoyed in the previous wins over Buckland and Cullompton, however, they found a way to break the deadlock on 15 minutes.
A foul on Deon Moore ten yards from goal prevented the Torquay man from forcing home the ball in open play, but after the Brixham challenge was penalised by the referee, Moore duly stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way, and fire the ball high into the roof of the net.
Although the Fishermen failed to seriously work Gulls keeper Zak Baker in the summer sun, the hosts remained resolute in defence, and it remained 1-0 at the change of ends.
Wholesale changes failed to alter the pattern of the game significantly, although Brixham certainly carried more threat going forward.
A moment of good fortune brought about a second goal eight minutes after the restart.
Isaac Westendorf’s introduction immediately caused panic the the Brixham backline, and although they initially repelled the threat brought by the giant German striker, an unfortunate deflection saw the ball rebound off a defender and into the back of the net, with the goalkeeper stranded.
Despite plenty of huff and puff from both sides, the boiling hot conditions eventually dictated the scoreline would remain at 2-0.
Another pre-season test passed, with a midweek trip to Plymouth Parkway next on the agenda.
