Winning is a habit, and United Women will hope to carry on that habit when they travel to face Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) in the latest round of the FA Women’s National League Cup this Sunday (06/09/26 2pm KO).
United will come into the game in impressive form, having picked up wins over Ascot United and Bridgwater United, scoring seven goals and conceding none. A weekend without a game, following the postponement of the Gwalia United fixture, means Ryan Perks’ squad will be well rested, with those carrying injuries hopefully close to full fitness once again.
The most impressive aspect of United’s opening two home fixtures of the season has been not only the score lines and the number of different goal scorers, but also the defensive displays required to keep clean sheets in both games.
Bridgwater put that defensive resolve to the test, and the concentration required to maintain a clean sheet while 6-0 up was testament to the professionalism of the players and the mentality instilled in them by Perks and the women’s coaching staff.
MAP will come into the game after a tough start to the season. The Ivybridge-based side are yet to pick up a win, but their young squad has enough experience at this level to turn things around, and Perks will be well aware of the threat they pose ahead of the fixture.
A win would put United in a strong position to progress to one of the next stages of the competition, or potentially drop down to the FA Women’s Plate. That will provide more than enough motivation for Ryan and his team.
Victory would also open up the possibility of a mouth-watering, winner-takes-all tie at Home Park against Plymouth Argyle in the final round of the group stage.
Sunday’s game will take place at Ivybridge Football Club’s Erme View ground, with kick-off at 2pm.
