REPORT: BARNSTAPLE 0 – 2 UNITED YOUTH

Torquay United’s youth team are through to the next round of the FA Youth Cup, after a two-goal win over hosts Barnstaple Town at Mill Road.

United began the game well, although a committed home side managed to keep The Gulls at bay until the 16th minutes, as a ball into the box was latched onto by George Powell, who coolly slotted a low shot beyond the goalkeeper from twelve yards out to make it 1-0.

United then took charge of proceedings without adding to it, and Barum nearly made Torquay pay just before the break, when a left wing cross caused chaos inside the box, with a United defender forced to see the ball out of danger’s way in the nick of time.

The second half began in rather scrappy fashion, although it remained The Young Gulls who were calling the shots.

A determined backline limited United to a few half chances, before Jonah Shaw’s run was ended abruptly inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick.

Powell stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong to double his own, and his side’s tally.

A sending off for Town made the result a bit of a formality after that, although Mack Stokes did make one smart low parry to keep a clean sheet in the dying moments.

The adventure continues… well played, lads!
