Matt Jay Appointed Head of Youth | Extends Playing Contract | Matt Anthony Appointed Head of Football Development

Torquay United is pleased to announce that first-team player Matt Jay will take on the role of Head of Youth, with Matt Anthony appointed as the club’s Head of Football Development. Jay has also signed an extension to his playing contract until 2028 and will a remain part of Jimmy Ball’s first team squad.

The appointments represent an important step in the continued development of the club’s youth programme, strengthening the pathway from grassroots football through to the first team and creating a more unified approach across all age groups.

Jay’s long and successful career in the English Football League saw him established as a talented attacking midfielder with a reputation for his technical ability, creativity and eye for goal. Having progressed through the youth system at Exeter City, Jay progressed into the first team and went on to make 206 appearances, scoring 54 goals in red and white.

Following his successes with the Grecians, where he captained the team to promotion in 2021/22, Jay joined Colchester United before he made his return to the South West in 2025, when he chose to join his hometown club, Torquay United.

Whilst the Gulls waited for the arrival of manager Jimmy Ball, the club leaned on Jay’s experience and strong coaching qualities to lead some of the team’s training sessions during the interim. Jay will now help shape the club’s youth coaching syllabus and ensuring the first team’s footballing philosophy is reflected throughout the setup.

As part of his responsibilities, Jay will also develop a continuing professional development (CPD) programme to support the ongoing development of the club’s youth coaches. He will work alongside South Devon College to support its Under-18 and Under-19 programmes, while helping players make the transition into adult football.

Matt Anthony, a highly qualified UEFA B Licence coach with an established understanding of the club’s youth programme, will support the football development, administration and organisation of the setup. His experience will be central to supporting all age groups and the ongoing work with South Devon College.

Working together, Jay and Anthony will expand competitive opportunities for young players, including arranging fixtures against other academy clubs, with youth tournaments and tours among their longer-term ambitions.

The appointments will also strengthen the connection between the club’s youth setup and the Torquay United Community Sports Trust, where Anthony will continue in his role as manager.

Please join us in congratulating the pair on their new roles with Torquay United.
