Torquay United AFC is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Dick Edwards.
Central defender Edwards arrived at Plainmoor in June 1970 from Aston Villa, with a fee of £8,000 securing his transfer to Allan Brown’s Gulls, having previously cost the midlands club £30,000 pounds to sign him from Mansfield Town.
Dick remained with United for three years, amassing 117 appearances and 7 goals. He became a firm fan favourite with the Yellow Army for his footballing ability on the pitch and for his charismatic personality off it.
Edwards scored in a memorable FA Cup win for United against his former team Aston Villa in our 1970-71 campaign. His acrobatic celebration after scoring capped a 3-1 win.
Edwards also gained widespread acclaim as a country & western singer, pairing up with Torquay team mate Bruce Stuckey to record TUFC anthem ‘Oh United’.
A talented footballer and musician, Edwards continued to take an active interest in the fortunes of Torquay United and the thoughts and condolences of everybody at the Club go out to his family and friends at this very sad time.
