United rounded off their pre-season with a win over Devon rivals Exeter City at Plainmoor on Friday evening.
A one-way start to proceedings saw United set up camp inside the Exeter half, and they were rewarded with the breakthrough on 15 minutes.
After Jordan Young’s dash into the box drew a clumsy challenge from a City defender, the referee was perfectly placed to make a swift decision, which unsurprisingly ended with him pointing to the penalty spot.
Deon Moore duly tucked the ball away with ease, confidently sending visiting goalkeeper Frankie Phillips the wrong way.
Ten minutes later, and the lead was doubled.
A break down the right saw a low ball delivered to Isaac Westendorf at the near post, allowing the tall striker to turn swiftly and fire the ball inside the near post.
Despite rarely threatening, City did pull one back just before the break, as former Gulls loanee Kieran Wilson robbed Torquay keeper Toby Savin ten yards from goal, before firing the loose ball into the unguarded net.
2-1 at the change of ends.
The second 45 minutes was a slightly more even affair, although the travelling Grecians fans had their impressive custodian Phillips to thank on multiple occasions, as he made a number of fine saves to prevent further damage.
City thought they had stolen a late leveller on 82 minutes, but an offside flag instantly cut short the visiting celebrations, and the decision looked about right.
Apart from that, Jimmy Ball’s side held on comfortably for the win to round off pre-season, as all attentions now switch to the opening day of the National League South season next weekend.
