After a week that saw pre-season training gain a competitive edge, as well as another impressive addition made to the Gulls squad, boss Gary Johnson provided supporters with a progress report.

“As with all pre-seasons, you have to build it up,” began Johnson.

“We’ve been able to get in a lot of football, because we’ve seen that the lads have worked very, very hard during the lockdown on their own. That doesn’t get them out of the running, but it means that we can do some running, and some football.

“Of course, you need to get sharp as quickly as possible, and the only way to get that sharpness is to have competitive football. We’ve done small-sided competitive games and probably by the time we play Hemel next week, we will be ready for an 11-a-side competitive game against outside opposition.

“Of course, I’m very pleased with the new signings. A lot goes into bringing new signings into our club. I believe we’ve added experience to our squad, the latest being Dean Moxey. All the players seem to have gelled pretty quickly, in the respect that they have for each other’s game. I know how much the lads are looking forward to a competitive game, so they don’t have to keep kicking their mate in training!

“So far, so good – A few little niggles that you get during pre-season, and we’ll take care of one or two that need management at the moment, to make sure we have a fully fit squad come October 3rd. The biggest thing is looking forward to having spectators back in our ground, so we can all get back to a new normality.

“See you soon!”
