Although United’s FA Youth Cup tie at Bishops Lydeard was a victim of adverse weather conditions on Tuesday night, last Sunday saw the Under-18s taste Devon Youth Cup success away to Barnstaple Town.
Following on from their excellent start to their league campaign, a fast start from the men in yellow saw them taking charge of proceedings at Mill Road from almost the first whistle, and despite a fightback from their hosts, Chris Todd’s Torquay side eventually ran out impressive 6-3 winners, thanks to goals from Jack Winsor, Jayden Gilbert (2), Theo Cadby, Joe Edmonds and Callum Thomas.
Gilbert’s brace was enough to earn his the Man of the Match award, whilst Winsor scored the goal of the game, with a superb solo effort.
“It was a really good performance,” began Todd.
“To be fair, we went 4-0 up within about 25 minutes, and it was a really good display. We were on the front foot, and we shocked them a little bit with how quick we started. We went four goals ahead and then took our foot off the gas a little bit.
“We came out in the second half, and they got an early goal. Obviously that shook us a little bit because they were back in the game, then they grabbed another to make it 4-2, and then you’re thinking ‘here we go’, but we dug in.
“Overall I was really pleased with the performance, it was very encouraging. It carried on our performance from the week beforehand, even though we lost against Mangotsfield, we carried on a good performance through to the Sunday. I was really pleased last night, and was just disappointed not to play last night, to carry it on again.”
The rearranged FA Youth Cup tie at Bishops Lydeard will now take place next Monday (4th October), however before that, it’s a return to league action, with a trip to Wimborne next up on the agenda this Saturday.
