Gary Johnson’s side will be looking to return to winning ways at Plainmoor on Saturday when FC Halifax come to town.

With fifth-placed Halifax taking on a United team looking to chalk up their fifth successive home victory, it promises to be another exciting encounter as the Club celebrates it’s new partnership with #HerGameToo.

Who’s the Boss?

Pete Wild was appointed as Halifax manager in July 2019, following the departure of previous boss Jamie Fullarton. A decade at Oldham Athletic saw Pete serve the club admirably in a number of roles, with the highlight coming as he masterminded a 1-0 FA Cup win over Premier League side Fulham during his spell in caretaker charge.

After securing an unexpected play-off place for The Shayman in 2019/20, Wild will be looking for his side to match that success once again, following a 10th-placed finish last term.

Player to Watch

Manchester-born schemer Matty Warburton began his career with local club Main Road, before two spells at Curzon Ashton were separated by a spell at Salford City. The former PE teacher then enjoyed a highly successful spell with Stockport County, notching 48 goals in 99 games.

That spell prompted a move to League Two side Northampton for the attacking midfielder, however having failed to settle with The Cobblers, Warburton made a loan move to Yeovil Town, prior to a permanent move to The Shay last summer.

Played for Both

Billy Waters is no stranger to Gulls boss Gary Johnson, having played an integral role in Cheltenham Town regaining their Football League status, before arriving at Plainmoor last season.

Having begun his career at Crewe Alexandra, a successful trial with Town paid huge dividends for both the team and individual, as Waters notched 11 goals as The Robins marched towards the 2015/16 National League title. Billy went on to enjoy an even better season in the division above the following season, with his 16 goals earning him Cheltenham’s Player of the Season award, prior to his move to Northampton later that summer.

Subsequent loan spells at Cambridge United, Cheltenham again and Newport followed, before notching 8 goals in 35 appearances last season, as The Gulls narrowly missed out on promotion to the EFL.

Previous Encounter

With United taking on Halifax at Plainmoor in their penultimate fixture prior to the early curtailment of the 2019/20 campaign, it was a returning Gull that proved to be the hero, as Ade Azeez noched the the only goal of the game midway through the second half to seal all three points for Gary Johnson’s men.

Having scored on his original debut for Torquay some seven years previously as a youngster on loan from Charlton Athletic, Azeez repeated the feat following a similar temporary move from Newport County, as United ran out 1-0 winners.
