For TUWFC manager Steve Elswood, England Women’s Euro 2022 success has the potential to change the face of the women’s game – both locally and nationally.

After achieving cup success himself as Manager of United’s Women’s side that came out on top in the ClickHub Devon Women’s Premier Cup last term, Steve Elswood was understandably delighted when the Lionesses etched themselves in the history books after overcoming Germany to win the Women’s Euros for the first time on Sunday.

“What an incredible night, what an amazing night for anybody who is involved in women and girls football to be part of – and I think the most important thing now is football is football. There is no women’s football, there is no men’s football anymore and I think Sunday showed by the millions, and millions of people that have supported the team and given them their best wishes that football is I think now, a one-person sport, no matter what your sex.

“I think the trophy aside, that victory was more than just a trophy. I think it leaves a legacy, it leaves a momentum, it leaves a passion, in this country that I can only see young girls grabbing with both hands now at every opportunity at grassroots, at Community Sports Trusts – like ours, and it’s going to do the women’s game a power of good.

“I remember speaking about the HerGameToo campaign last year, and this is the icing on the cake.

“Like I said I think it’s going to boom right now, in this country, and across the world, and become the greatest sport played by the most amount of people in the world, so a very, very proud day to be part of, football, and especially women’s football.

“As a Club, we’ve become champions this year for the first time this season, and the country – our Lionesses have achieved the same thing.

“What a wonderful night,” said Steve.
