Torquay United’s Women continued their preparations ahead of their inaugural National League season on Sunday with a hard-fought win over Pucklechurch Sports Ladies.
New signing Emma Hollingsworth gave the Yellow Army a sneak preview of things to come with a tidy finish from inside the box to open the scoring and put her new side 1-0 up, before a first-half leveller from the hosts made it all-square at the interval.
Following the restart, a rejuvenated Pucklechurch side turned the game on its head by taking the lead with a free-kick that deceived United goalkeeper Emma Ayres in-between the sticks.
TUWFC are famous for their fighting spirit however, and it was Tracey Cross who restored parity with an excellent effort from the edge of the box to make it 2-2.
An entertaining encounter looked to be ending with honours-even, however with five minutes remaining, a gamble paid off in Torquay’s favour.
With defender Jana Richards sent forward into attack in the hope of sparking a late winner, her decisive run into the box drew a foul from a Sports defender, leaving the referee with no option but to point directly to the penalty spot.
The responsibility of turning a draw into a morale-boosting win was given to Club Captain Danni Wyatt, who duly buried the ball past the Pucklechurch ‘keeper to make it 3-2.
Moneyfields Cup Tie Added To Fixture List
TUWFC will now face Portsmouth-based outfield Moneyfields in successive fixtures, after United were drawn away to their opponents in the League / Plate Qualifying Round on Sunday, August 27th, before the two sides meet at Coach Road seven days later in a National League fixture.
