Members of Torquay United’s backroom staff will be spending November taking on the Prostate United 2021 challenge, to raise awareness of prostate cancer, and fundraise for Prostate Cancer UK.

Kai Hepworth has formed an admirable team to represent the Club, by joining forces with Kenny Griffiths, Russell Cleave, Louie Birkenshaw, Andy Roberts and Ryan Scholes to run 5km or cycle 15km every day throughout the month of November to aid this very worthy cause.

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition – to stop prostate cancer damaging the lives of men and their families, with the disease being the most common cancer in men. Statistics show that 1 in all 8 men are diagnosed in their lifetime, or even more alarmingly, 1 in 4 black men.

“It’s for a great cause,” began Kai.

“It starts today, and I’m buzzing to get started. I’m glad that a bunch of staff members have joined in as well, I’m very happy with it. I’ve never done anything like this before, this is a new one for me. I’ve never been much of a runner, my enjoyable place is in the gym, not running around, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Although Hepworth and his team may not boast a huge amount of serious running experience, the group are certainly not lacking in their commitment to the cause, as United’s Head of Medical goes on to explain.

“None of us are really runners, the only proper runner out of all us is Andy Roberts, so to be honest, it’s a bit more of a motivation thing. We’re all spurring each other on, as opposed to it being a competition.”

Having completed the first day of the challenge on Monday, another member of the team gave another insight to the task that lays ahead of them.

“I’ve done the first one today, and I can’t feel my calves – I’m struggling to walk!” said The Gulls’ Video Analyst, Louie Birkenshaw.

“I didn’t really have time to do some runs before it, so I went straight into it, and my legs are feeling the effects of it!”

United’s ‘Super Six’ have already raised in the region of £200 for Prostate Cancer UK for signing up to the task ahead, and any United fans wishing to support them further, can do so by donating via their JustGiving page here.

Best of luck, lads!
