As Club Captain of Torquay United Women, Danni Wyatt is well placed to highlight the growing interest in the women’s game, with tonight’s Euro 2022 semi-final against Sweden capturing the nation’s imagination.
After taking part in the Club’s official kit photoshoot last week with fellow United stalwart Jana Richards, Danni reflected on how the profile has been raised at both club level, and country.
“There is so much more hype around the England women’s team this year, and so there should be,” began Wyatt.
“This is exactly what it should mean for people. It’s been incredible to see so many supporters get behind their country for the Lionesses this year, including my dad, my brother’s girlfriend and even the Yellow Army! I’ve had chats at Plainmoor with people talking to me about the Euros, and how impressed they are. The depth in this England squad has been like no other, and England really could go all the way this time.
“We face our toughest opponents of the tournament tonight, so I’m nervous, but confident the world rankings won’t matter on the field tonight – not after what we’ve seen our lionesses can do!”
Looking closer to home, Danni went on to reiterate how the support her side has received from the Club is helping push last season’s Devon Premier Cup winners towards even greater heights.
“The time feels right for women’s football to reach new heights and Torquay United have been fantastic in assisting our Women’s team do that this season – propelling us and preparing us for hopefully a great season in the South West Premier League. All of us at Torquay are shouting ‘come on you Lionesses’ this evening!”
As for predicting the outcome of tonight’s semi-final, United’s captain was only too happy to oblige.
“My score prediction is England 2 – 1 Sweden.”
That, Danni, would do us all very nicely indeed.
