Head of youth Dave Hedges has been busy working to strengthen United’s youth development system since his appointment in late August.
“I’m really enjoying it,” said Hedges ahead of Tuesday night’s U18s 1-0 victory in the FA Youth Cup. “I’ve brought in a few changes. I’ve tried to implement that all coaches have an assistant. So far I have brought in seven coaches, five of them assistants.”
“We have just brought in a Spanish coach, Cristian Muniz, to assist Kevin Light with the U16s. In the U14s I have brought in two coaches. Nick Garlick, who is also the assistant Torquay United Ladies coach, comes in with his assistant, Paul Bishop. We also have a new assistant for the U12s to assist Pete Hampton, James Truscott, from Exeter University. We’ve had very positive feedback regarding his appointment. Ian Ridge is coaching the U11s along with his assistant, Alan Briard. The parents can see the impact that the new changes have had.”
United’s coaching philosophy remains consistent with Hedges in charge – ball mastery.
“The overriding philosophy for all age groups revolves around ball mastery, having the players comfortable with the ball at their feet. We hope we give them the platform to express themselves on the pitch, with some flair as well. It bodes well for the future.”
United’s backroom staff has been bolstered with the appointment of Pete Johnson. United’s scouting network is stronger than ever with Johnson and Hedges on board.
“While I am head of youth, I still am looking out for players for the first team. We have Josh Baxter and Olaf Koszela who are two promising young players that are looking to take the next step, so the link is there from the youth team to the first team.”
