TUWFC manager Steve Elswood reflects on the opening game, before looking ahead to the women’s first home game of the season.

Following an opening weekend 3-0 defeat away at Sherborne Town Ladies, Steve assesses the positives from that game before looking ahead with a chance to carry those positives into this Sunday’s home game against Poole Town Ladies at Coach Road (2pm KO).

“Our opener was as tough as we expected it to be, however despite the scoreline the performance was certainly there throughout the game and we looked very dangerous going forward, creating opportunities and hitting the woodwork. Had it not been for an outstanding game from the Sherborne goalkeeper the score could have been very different, but we give our opponents credit, they deserve, they took their chances and were resolute in defending against our pressure. Overall the performance was there just not the result, so we go into the game on Sunday in a positive frame of mind for sure.”

“Poole Town Ladies have played at a higher level in Tier 4 for several seasons now, but had a really tough 2021/22 season that saw them relegated from the National League. We played them last year in the FA Cup and won comfortably to take us through to the First Round Proper for the first time in our history.”

“They are rebuilding and a bit like any team including us, there are areas where it can take time for that spark to happen. Poole lost their opening game to Bishops Lydeard Ladies on the opening weekend, but we can’t look too much into that as I’m sure they will be prepared for us and would have worked hard on their set-up and recruitment this week, so we have to be ready. They’re a team that doesn’t give up and give their all in games, so that makes them dangerous.”

“It will be good to be back on the 5g surface at Coach Road which suits elements of our play, and we now need to make sure that the Devon F.A Headquarters becomes a fortress for us where we don’t drop points this season. With the Yellow Army in attendance to cheer the ladies on, I’m confident we can achieve this.”

This Sunday’s game against Poole Town Ladies will take place at Devon F.A Headquarters, Coach Road, Newton Abbot, TQ12 1EJ. The game has a 2pm kick off time with entrance prices being £4 for adults and £2 for Under 18s.

There will be live a broadcast of this game on TUFC Radio with Ray Duffy & Ian Brown if you can’t get along to the game, with the coverage starting around ten minutes before kick off.
