United taste Emirates FA Cup action for the first time on Saturday in a 12:30pm kick-off away to Lymington Town.
“I know that sometimes the Cup can be a leveller,” said TUFC manager, Gary Johnson. “If your team doesn’t turn up and really put in a big effort the opposition are always going to be good enough to beat you because their mental state is going to be: this could be our cup final. They’ll be ready for it.
“We’ve got to go into it knowing that we’ve got to give it our best efforts because you can be beat. You can be embarrassed and get beat and that’s what you don’t want. We don’t go into it over-confident. We’ve got to make sure we perform.
“I always respect all opposition. What you can’t do is win two or three and then be complacent and get beat by a team that we’re not expecting to lose to.”
It has been seven years since United last won an FA Cup game. United’s last win came in 2011 when goals from Danny Stevens, Rene Howe, and Kevin Nicholson secured a place in the second round. The length of time since United’s last win does not matter to the new manager, Gary Johnson.
“No, nothing at all. I’ve had some good times in the FA Cup. It’s a new era and a new regime. We’ll just be saying this is another game that we need to win.”
Defender Jean-Yves Koue Niate looks likely to re-join the match day squad. United’s other injury concerns are still on the recovery trail.
Lymington Town FC and Torquay United have never played each other before. The Linnets are currently in the Wessex Premier Division and overcame Lydney Town 2-1 in the previous round. They are unbeaten so far this season.
