Torquay’s Under 9-side took part in a two day football tournament last weekend, and they ended it by coming away with the SCI Football festival trophy.

The first day consisted of four games, with our youngsters getting off to a fantastic start by defeating Oldland Abbotonians from Gloucestershire 7-0. The 2nd match against Dosthill Colts from Birmingham ended scoreless, before United secured a 1-0 against AFC Brixham. The final match of the day saw Torquay beat MAP Juniors from Plymouth 3-1. Charlie Wise was declared MOTM for Day 1 following a number of outstanding performances.

Day 2 saw the Young Gulls open with another impressive result, a 3-0 win against WBB Yellows from Newton Abbot. A 0-0 draw against Wimborne & Holt Youth from Dorset was next up, before United won 2-0 against the Wimborne & Holt 2nd team. The last group game against WBB Blue ended in a 3-0 victory, which was enough to secure 2nd place in the group, and a semi-final against WBB Yellows. Thomas Ross scored the only goal in the semi, to see Torquay progress through to the final.

The final against MAP Juniors looked to be ending in defeat, before a last minute Ross free-kick saw Torquay’s U9s send the match to penalties. It was left to goalkeeper Olly Payne produce the heroics in the shoot-out, with United eventually triumphing 5-3 to claim the trophy. Payne’s saves earned him the Day 2 MOTM award, whilst the tournament also marked the last matches for Lee Stevens, prior to his move to Exeter City.

  • Former Aston Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendrie was on hand to present coach Paul Mills, captain Oscar Mills and rest of the players with their awards.

Congratulations to Paul Mills and all the lads!
