United completed two signings today and we caught up with head coach Gary Owers for his thoughts.

On signing Ben Winter: “He’s a young player who has been quite highly thought of and he’s a very good addition to the squad. He gives us a lots of options because he can play as an out-and-out right-back, or he can drop in as a centre-half if required. He can also play as a right wing-back as well.

“He had a really good start to the season last year and then came of it a little bit. He’s got to find some consistency to his game but I’m sure that he will and we’ll help him do that.

“That right sided position was filled by a number of players last season so I’m looking for someone to nail down that position for themselves.

On signing Samir Nabi: “Samir was someone that I watched loads and loads of times when he was at West Brom, both him and his brother who went on to get a decent move to Peterborough.

“I’m really pleased to get him, I tried to get him last season when he was at Carlisle. He’s an excellent midfield player that can chip in with a goal. He’s one of them young players that thinks he can help himself by coming to Torquay to get games under his belt and move back up the pyramid. I have big expectations of him.

“I think they’ll like him. He’s a really good footballer. He can get on the ball and hopefully create. I think he’ll turn out to be a really good signing for us.

On further transfer activity: “I’ve got a couple more deals verbally agreed. I’m still in discussions with two or three players and hopefully I can finalise those deals next week.

“Then we’ll see what’s about in pre-season. I’m going to leave myself a little bit of space to couple of players in. I’m pleased with the way the team re-building is going.”
