Torquay United FC are delighted to announce the appointment of Mike Edwards as Assistant Manager.

Former defender Edwards, 44, amassed over 550 Football League appearances in an outstanding twenty-year playing career, representing the likes of Hull City, Grimsby, Carlisle and Notts County, before moving into a coaching role at Meadow Lane.

Following that, Mike took up a position as Performance Coach at Truro City, where the link-up with Gulls boss Paul Wotton first emerged.

Having also made the switch across the Tamar earlier this month, Wotton spoke of his delight at the prospect of being reunited with Edwards again next term.

“I know Mikey very well, having played against him many times during my playing career and worked with him in my time at Truro City.

“He’s somebody I trust and respect, and I’m really glad he is on board.”

United’s new Assistant explained a bit more about how the move to Plainmoor came about.

“I’ve worked with the Gaffer for the last four years, and we have got to know each other more and more, and towards the end of last season, I worked on matchdays with him.

“We are two very like-minded people, who get on well with each other, but also bring different things to each other, which is great and I am looking forward to it.”

With Torquay’s new management team finalised, attention will now undoubtedly turn towards the 2024/25 squad building plans, a subject that both spoke with enthusiasm on.

“We know it is a rebuilding process, which is great ,” said Mike.

“It isn’t the first time we have been at this rebuilding stage, we were both massively hard workers on the pitch, and that’s what we want from the players as well.

“The team will give everything it can out on the pitch, and that has to be the standard and the work ethic. It is great to be at something that is fresh and new, because we know what we want from performances and how we want to act on the pitch.

“It is great to be part of everything around the club, and hopefully we can generate those good times again.”

Wotton, meanwhile, feels the partnership will put the club in good stead for the season ahead.

“It will definitely be a fresh squad that is for sure, and fresh ideas as Mikey is a different character to me.

“He is very calm and logical, whereas I can be a bit louder and a bit more forceful, so we balance each other very well. We had a season in the league last year, so we know quite a bit about it.

“Now we’re just looking forward to getting going.”
