Gary Johnson celebrates five years in charge of Torquay United AFC
Believe it or not, it’s five years ago today that Gary was unveiled as The Gulls’ new manager on 13th September 2018, and what a journey we’ve all been on together since!
Having previously won promotion at Yeovil Town (three times), Bristol City and Cheltenham Town prior to his arrival at Plainmoor, Johnson wasted no time in adding the National League South championship to that impressive CV, as United celebrated winning their first league title in over 90 years, before the Club went within a whisker of following that success up with a long-awaiting return to the EFL just two years later.
With his class of 2023/24 currently lying 3rd in the early National League South table – just a point off top spot – few would bet against against the Torquay’s bringing more silverware to the English Riviera come the end of the season.
For The Record…
Last Saturday’s 2-1 home victory over Chelmsford was Johnson’s 111th in 238 games as Gulls boss, gives him an impressive win percentage of 46.64%.
During his five years at the helm, United have also set a whole host of Club records:
- Record FA Cup winning margin (7-0 v Lymington)
- Most league wins during a season (27)
- Fewest league defeats in a season (8)
- Most league goals scored in a season (93)
- Fewest league goals conceded in a season (41)
- Most consecutive league wins (10)
- Longest unbeaten league run (16)
- Highest seasonal points tally (88)
Happy Anniversary, Gaffer!
