Torbay’s naturally inspiring newspaper, Torbay Weekly, features more key moments from throughout the club’s history in this week’s chapters from Inside the Gulls.
Kicking off on Thursday with the master craftsman Alex Russell, the chapter focuses on a player blessed with wonderful talent, who controlled the Torquay United midfield for a number of memorable seasons – particularly under Leroy Rosenior. Russell formed a wonderful partnership with Jason Fowler and was so well-regarded by his team-mates that they often described him as the player ‘who made others around look good’.
On Friday, the series recalls one of the finest United stories ever told. The Great Escape involving a Police dog and last-minute drama is now part of Plainmoor folklore, after 45 minutes of absolute mayhem and a tale that has continued to attract global attention, including a full-length feature on Netflix.
Saturday is all about the great Don Mills, widely believed to be the best player ever to wear the famous Yellow and Blue. The Don, who graced Plainmoor in between the late 1950s and early 1960s, was clearly a First Division player operating in the third tier.
All of these chapters are accompanied by wonderful images from United’s past, with thanks going to Pinnacle Photo Agency, Paul Levie and the late Colin Bratcher for supplying them.
