Torquay United AFC is delighted to announce the permanent signing of defender Joe Lewis from Championship side Swansea City.

Lewis, 21, enjoyed an impressive loan spell with The Gulls last season, making 28 appearances before the National League campaign was curtailed early in March.

During his previous spell, Joe showed himself to be equally adept in a number of positions, and his arrival provides manager Gary Johnson with more welcome selection options, as United strive to extend their superb table-topping form throughout the course of 2020/21.

“I know we say it every time, but it really is a coup for us to take on Joe Lewis permanently from Swansea,” said Johnson

“He knows us, he knows our game, he’s a good lad, a good professional, very fit, and can play in any position across the back four, or indeed as a defending midfielder.

“So needless to say, it’s a top signing, and I’m very, very happy to have Joe permanently back at Plainmoor.”

United’s manager also paid tribute to everyone that had worked so hard behind the scenes at both clubs to ensure that the signing was completed in time for tonight’s crucial clash against Sutton United at Plainmoor.

“Really, on behalf of myself and Joe, we have to thank Swansea as a club, Joe’s representatives, and also Mel and George, for the effort that they’ve made to get an international clearance and signing within 24 hours, which is probably a record!

“We have got to thank all parties for getting that through so quickly. We also say well down to Joe, who organised himself a PCR Coronavirus test before he could drive to us. I’m pleased to say we got that back in time as well – and he is negative – which allows him to come down and be in our bubble.”

Welcome back to Plainmoor, Joe!
