Defender Aaron Barnes got his first taste of action for United in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose.
After joining on loan from Charlton too late to be considered for our match against Eastleigh, and a knock ruling him out of the defeat against Bromley, he was finally able to put in a first team appearance. It came in midfield, not his natural position but one that he took on without question.
“I knew I was playing the day before when we were doing some shape work in training,” said Barnes. “I started in centre midfield which is not a position I have played that often recently. I have played there during my youth team days, during my time at Arsenal and Charlton. I feel like I have the skill set to play in midfield. I’m just happy to play wherever the head coach wants me to. It was a great experience.”
Barnes caught the eye on Saturday. He exuded confidence in the middle of the park and was a key component in keeping the Silkmen at bay, and getting United on the front foot.
“The Gaffer asked me to do the job of a defensive midfielder. I see myself as being able to do all roles in midfield. My job was to keep it simple and to keep the ball moving.”
Barnes’ next match could be the big one on Saturday against Barrow AFC. He is relishing the chance to start once again and this time in front of the Yellow Army.
“We took a great deal of confidence from Saturday’s performance and I’m looking forward to the fans getting behind us and for the team to deliver.
“I haven’t played at home yet and it will be a great experience for me. I’m personally buzzing for the game and hopefully we will put on a performance that the fans can be proud of.”
