There was yet another great turnout at our latest Retro Gulls event, which took place in Boots & Laces on Thursday afternoon.

Our Retro Gulls events often see a great turnout, with monthly events throughout the football season seeing a number of supporters aged 50 and over come together for an afternoon in Boots & Laces, and on Thursday 26th October between 2pm-4pm, it was another well attended event.

The afternoon began with an insightful talk from Phil Tearle of Prostate Cancer UK, with his presentation raising awareness of the disease, discussing symptoms and diagnosis, as well as talking about the charity Prostate Cancer UK, and how they can support those with Prostate Cancer. Further details regarding the work of Prostate Cancer UK can be found HERE.

The second instalment of the session saw Kit Manager / Sports Therapist Russell Cleave and Sports Therapist Intern Josh Chubb take to the floor, with the pair, along with Goalkeeping Coach Ken Griffiths currently participating in the Prostate United 2023 Challenge, which is raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

After talking about the challenge, Russell and Josh answered questions from the audience, who were keen to know more and suggest ideas for their challenge for next year, before the duo went on to answer some questions about their roles within the backroom staff at Torquay United AFC. With Russell and Josh having now reached their fundraising target of £300 as their challenge approaches the final few days, supporters wishing to donate can do so HERE.

Following on from the afternoon’s guest speaker and question and answer’s session, it was time for the eagerly awaited quiz. In a 15 question general knowledge multiple choice quiz, it was the Psychedelic Gulls who came out on top, with an impressive 13 out of 15. A closely contested quiz though, three other teams were close behind with 10 out of 15.

Torquay United AFC would like to thank everyone that came to Retro Gulls, and we look forward to welcoming you all back to Plainmoor for our next event of the season on Thursday 30th November, 2pm – 4pm!

About Retro Gulls

With the health and wellbeing in residents aged 50 and over widely recognised as another important aspect of community care within Torbay, supporters aged 50 and over will be invited to attend events in Boots & Laces once a month, with United stars present and past due to be in attendance for each meeting.

The Club will be focused on all things Torquay United, and will provide the opportunity to get Torquay talking. These events will give our ‘Retro Gulls’ the chance to discuss the current team, and those of yesteryear, with both fellow supporters and United stars past and present.

The events will vary each month, with future activities set to include fitness sessions, skittles, programme swap-shops, quizzes, bingo, workshops and much more!
