Trialists earn first win of pre-season campaign

A Torquay United XI made up solely of trialists (apart from goalkeeper, Neal Osborn) won 3-2 against a competitive Newton Abbot Spurs.

A goal from forward James Gray and a double from striking partner Mike Fondop earned United a win in the opening match of our pre-season campaign.

Newton Abbot Spurs started the game well and took the lead through a close-range strike from Jake Chisholm.

United, stung from going a goal down, eased back possession and started to create some chances. Mostly though, Newton Abbot Spurs kept United to shots from outside the area or from wide angles.

United largely dominated the rest of the half but the chances they were creating weren’t finding the target. Striker James Gray did find the back of the net when he lashed the ball past Bojar to level in the 39th minute.

United’s dominance continued into the second half, and it was rewarded in the 73rd minute when a low cross into the box was put home by Mike Fondop.

Spurs equalized in the 81st minute thanks to a header by Liam Moseley but Fondop struck the winning goal a minute later.

Montell Gibson in action.

After a rough count it looked like around 400-500 of the Yellow Army had made the trip to the Rec. Thank you to everyone that turned out to support the team.

The next match of our pre-season campaign takes us to Stoke Gabriel FC on Saturday for a 2pm kick-off. See you there!
