United play two games in three days beginning Saturday. Gary Owers takes his men to Hertfordshire to play 8th place Boreham Wood.

“We’re competitive,” said Torquay United head coach, Gary Owers. “I follow form leagues, and looking at the table I think we’re about 11th [during] the last six games, so we’re not the worst team in the league on current form. We have to try and improve that position.”

The Wood are fresh from a 4-0 defeat to promotion chasing Sutton United. Kieran Murtagh was sent off against Sutton but had it quashed on appeal. They have 10 wins, 9 draws, and 6 defeats from their 25 games so far this season. Bruno Andrade is Boreham’s top goal scorer with 10 National League goals.

United will be missing George Dowling after he was sent off against Eastleigh. Jazzi Barnum-Bobb completes the second of his three game ban after receiving a straight red card against Maidstone in the FA Trophy. Josh Gowling is still receiving treatment for a knee injury and Yan Klukowski is also absent through injury. United may not be able to field a full bench due to suspensions and injuries.

The Gaffer is looking for more of a goal-threat from his midfielders.

“Everyone’s talking about the need for a striker; we’re trying to solve that problem. If we can just be a little bit more of a threat and find that cutting edge from somewhere in the final third, I’m sure we can win more games.

“It’s a team game; we need to improve goals from set-plays and other players need to chip in with goals. Can we get a few more midfielders chipping in with the odd goal? My overriding thoughts are at the minute – we’re close.”
